Two confirmed dead from dangerous storms

Coroners have confirmed the deaths of two women in Mississippi following the dangerous storms that rocked the Magnolia state Sunday night and into Monday morning.

Shirley Thomas, 55, of Glendora in Tallahatchie County was confirmed dead by Coroner Ginger Meriweather.

“She was removed from the scene… it was still storming when that happened,” said Meriweather. “They were transporting her to the hospital but they were never able to get her pulse again.”

Thomas was the wife of Glendora mayor Johnny Thomas. He was in the living room watching TV, when the tree fell. He was forced to climb out of the home, unable to reach his wife.

The tree fell into the home shortly after 6pm Sunday.

In Florence, Rankin County Coroner David Ruth has confirmed the death of 52 year old Jacqueline Williams.

“We found her body within proximity of her car,” said Ruth.

Williams had made contact with 911 Monday morning as her car was being washed into Florence Creek by flood waters, but contact was lost at that time.

News Mississippi will continue to follow the impact of the storms across the state.
