  • Mississippians who identify as Bernie-bros are saving the date. U.S. Senator and former Presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders is coming to Mississippi, accompanied by actor Danny Glover. Their visit is at the behest of the MS Alliance for Fairness at Nissan’s automotive plant in Canton. The group has alluded to poor working conditions at the Nissan plant, which they want plant management to address. The “March on Mississippi” will take place March 4th at the Canton Sportsplex.

 

  • That state tax on online purchases appears to have exceptions.
    In the language of a statement by the MS department of revenue: Any sales made by a third-party independent seller, even though made through the Amazon marketplace, are not covered under the agreement. Third party sellers represent the majority of those offering goods on Amazon.

 

  • Hattiesburg’s City Council would like to invoke a one percent city sales tax to pay for road and bridge repairs, but they need the okay of the State legislature. If their request is approved, the measure still needs a 60 percent approval of Hub city voters in a special election to be scheduled.

 

  • Guilty of one charge. Not guilty of nine others. The verdict in Ben Allen’s embezzlement trial came down late yesterday. Allen presides over the Downtown Jackson Partners. The lone guilty verdict involved an unauthorized payment of his wife’s phone bill. Allen will be sentenced March 6th.

 

  • A Brandon man is now in jail, after eluding authorities for nearly half a decade. He’s charged with non-payment of nearly a quarter million dollars in child support. Tony Haywood was married for 16 years to a woman in Georgia. Upon divorcing, he was ordered to make scheduled support payments, which did not materialize. Now that amount has ballooned to six figures. Hence, Haywood’s arrest.
