Mississippi State women beat Baylor, move on to Final Four

History was made in Oklahoma City on Sunday night as the Mississippi State women’s basketball team punched their ticket to the Final Four.

The 94-85 overtime victory over Baylor, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, clinched the first Final Four appearance ever for the women’s basketball program at Mississippi State.

The Bulldogs were led by Morgan William.  The junior point guard scored 41 points on 59% shooting with seven assists and zero turnovers.

William’s game on Sunday is recognized as one of the most outstanding performances on that big of a stage in the history of Mississippi State athletics.

“My point guard was as good as they get today,” Head Coach Vic Schaefer said. “She put us on her back. She lead us. She was obviously feeling it. I ran a couple different things for her and just had to keep going back because they were having a hard time dealing with it. She wanted the ball.”

Victoria Vivians, the team’s leading scorer on the season, poured in 24 points of her own with six assists, six rebounds, and only one turnover.

“I thought (Vivians) was back to her old self today. I welcomed her to the party about mid way through the third quarter and told her that,” Schaefer said. “It sure helps to have that out there on the perimeter, that big two guard that can go get you a bucket, can rise up and jump up over people.”

Teaira McCowan added 10 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs, and Breanna Richardson notched eight points and five rebounds in the game.

On their way to the Final Four Mississippi State has defeated Troy, DePaul, Washington, and Baylor.

The Bulldogs will travel to Dallas and meet the winner of UConn and Oregon, who face-off on Monday night, on Friday.
