According to the state department of health, new cases of syphilis tripled in Mississippi between 2013 and 2016.
Those most at risk are gay and bisexual black men, as well as women. Women infected with syphilis during pregnancy run the risk of their baby dying or seeing major birth defects in their babies. Syphilis infection can also weaken the body’s ability to fight off HIV infection.
Advanced syphilis can invade major organs and cause debilitating illness or death. But when detected early, it’s easy to treat and cure. That’s why testing is so important: it can lead to quick, proper care that makes a great difference in your health and the health of others.
