Polls open on Tuesday for local elections

Don’t forget to head to the polls today, Municipal and county elections elections start Tuesday, May 6, 2017.

Voting in these races will take place in the county you are registered in. If you aren’t sure where that is you can contact the local circuit clerk’s office to find out what your polling location is.

“We [voting polls] are in about 12 or 15 areas. Contested ones, by memory are Moss Point, Hattiesburg, Hinton also has an election, and a few others,” said Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.

Before heading to the polls make sure you know a few things:

  • Take a government issues photo ID. If you show up without one you will be allowed to cast an affidavit ballot, but you must go back to the Municipal Clerk’s Office within five business days to show a valid ID.
  • You cannot campaign within 150 feet of any entrance to a poling place.
  • Do not take a photo of you casting your ballot, with the marked ballot in the picture.

“Everybody should go vote. When you get down to it, you have the right to govern, and that right comes from the ballot box,” said Hosemann.

He said so far a number of cities have already decided on mayoral elections from the primaries.
