A familiar face and name will be gracing our Magnolia State.
Bernie Sanders, the Vermont Senator and former Presidential candidate is coming to Canton. Sanders will be accompanied by actor, Danny Glover. The duo is appearing at the behest of the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan.
MAFFAN was founded after Congressman Bennie Thompson called on Mississippi leaders to form a committee to represent the concerns of Nissan workers. Nissan’s Canton facility does not have a union contract with the United Auto Workers Union.
Nissan’s has been the subject of criticism regarding allegations of racial hostility at the plant. Nissan estimates their workforce of approximately 6400 is 60 percent African American.
Sanders appearance will highlight a rally at the Canton Sportsplex in support of workers rights. The event is March 4th, three weeks from this Saturday.
