Amazon tax loophole

It depends on who is selling.

While some of us may have used the threat of a seven percent tax on Amazon purchases as a rational for buying an expensive leather coat, there are exceptions to the tax. It evidently applies to items sold by Amazon as a corporate selling entity. It does NOT apply to sellers that use Amazon as a marketplace.

This loophole has already been noted by a contingent of Mississippi’s online shoppers, and it’s bolstered by this statement from the Mississippi Department of Revenue:

Any sales made by a third-party independent seller, even though made through the Amazon marketplace, are not covered under the agreement.

While a seven percent tax is still poised to bring much needed millions into state coffers, it’s not the all-encompassing surcharge that it appeared to be at first glance.
